Jane Craighead wife of William McRee
Traveled with her husband, William McRee, a captain in the NC line during the Southern Campaigns, Provided support to troops. Jane Craighead (born 1774 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina) grew up surrounded by the intense civil conflicts of the Revolution's Southern Campaign. After marrying William McRee, she became a foundational pioneer woman, packing up her life and journeying across the Appalachian Mountains to help settle the early Tennessee frontier at Knoxville.

Wartime Geography: Mecklenburg County was so fiercely patriotic that British General Cornwallis famously dubbed it a "Hornet's Nest of Rebellion." The war here was a brutal, neighbor-against-neighbor civil war between Patriots and Loyalists. After the war concluded, Jane participated in the massive westward expansion, traveling through the dangerous Cumberland Gap to settle the untamed, heavily contested frontier of early Tennessee.
