Major Griffith John McRee (1758–1801) was a distinguished American Revolutionary War officer from North Carolina. He initially served as a Captain in the Wilmington District Minutemen and the 6th and 1st North Carolina Regiments of the Continental Line. McRee later attained the ranks of Major and Brevet Lieutenant Colonel, and was an original member of the North Carolina Society of the Cincinnati.
]Born in Bladen County, North Carolina, McRee saw significant service in the southern theater of the Revolutionary War. Historical military records—including his 1779 and 1780 muster rolls—document his command of the 1st North Carolina Regiment's company, where he defended the region against British advances. Following the war, he continued his public service in the military and later as a collector of revenue for the Wilmington district.
His descendants also had notable military and public careers; his son, Brevet Colonel William McRee, became a distinguished United States Army engineer and officer during the War of 1812.
